The Power of Journaling in Abby Jimenez’s Yours Truly

Move beyond feeling heartbroken and use journaling to help you rediscover who you are

Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez is a heartwarming romance novel that explores the power of journaling. The main character, Dr. Jacob Maddox, is an emergency medicine doctor who struggles with anxiety and social interactions. Jacob's use of journaling as a means of processing his emotions and gaining clarity on his relationships and experiences is a major theme throughout the book.

There is a certain vulnerability that comes with journaling, and we see this vulnerability in Jacob Maddox’s character throughout Yours Truly. Journaling allows him to make sense of his feelings and emotions. When he struggles to articulate how he feels to others, he can turn to his journal and write it all down. It becomes a safe space for him to explore his own thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. It’s a beautiful reminder that even when we struggle with anxiety or other challenges, journaling can help us make sense of our world and become better versions of ourselves.

As Jacob navigates his new workplace at one of the most prestigious hospitals in Minnesota, his anxiety makes it difficult for him to connect with his colleagues, including Dr. Briana Ortiz, the emergency room superstar whose personal life is in turmoil. However, as Jacob and Briana begin to exchange letters at work, stuck in each other's hospital lockers, their relationship deepens and they discover a connection through their shared struggles.

Through Jacob's journaling, readers are able to see the therapeutic benefits of writing and how it can help individuals manage their mental health. Jacob's tender and sensitive character, coupled with his use of journaling, highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-care in navigating life's challenges.

While journaling may not solve all of our problems, it can certainly help us to process our emotions and communicate more effectively. It’s a tool that we can use to reflect on our own lives and become more self-aware. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, going through a challenging time, or simply seeking greater clarity in your life, journaling can be an incredible source of support.

If you love journaling or reading about characters who use journaling for self-discovery then Jimenez's Yours Truly is the perfect book for you. Through Maddox’s character, we see firsthand how transformative journaling can be. It’s a tool that can help us make sense of our emotions and become more self-aware.

I highly recommend Abby Jimenez’s book Yours Truly if you enjoy romance novels with deep themes, twists and turns, some humor, and journaling in a starring role.

On a very personal note, I want to take this opportunity to thank Abby Jimenez not only for using journaling as a tool for one of her main characters to manage his mental health but also that she had a main character with chronic kidney disease. My youngest daughter has a single kidney and chronic kidney disease. I don’t think people are aware of the toll kidney disease can take on a person or their family. I applaud Jimenez for shining a light on this illness. I also appreciate her vulnerable author’s note at the end of the book. You’ll know what I’m talking about if you read the book. You should go do that now. It’s a good one!
